The number format WhatsApp expects, and what happens without the app.
The code holds https://wa.me/ followed by the number as digits only: country code first, no plus sign, no leading zeros, no spaces or dashes. The generator strips everything that is not a digit, so +44 (0)7700 900123 becomes 4407700900123, which is wrong. Enter the number the international way, 447700900123, and check the payload display before you download.
If you add a message it is appended as ?text= with URL encoding, so spaces show as %20. On a phone with WhatsApp installed the link opens a chat with that number and the message ready to send; the person does not need to save the contact first. On a phone without the app, or on a desktop, the link opens WhatsApp's own page, which offers the app or WhatsApp Web.
