Free Text to QR Code Generator

Encode raw messages, serial numbers, passwords, Wi-Fi keys, or product info into offline-readable static QR codes up to 3,000 characters.

A text QR code stores plain text in the symbol, so any scanner app shows the words instantly, with no link, no server and no internet connection.

A locker label with a plain text QR code beside a phone showing the decoded text: Locker 27, Code 4471, return the key to reception by 18:00
Works offline

The note is the code

A locker label with plain text needs no connection at all. The phone shows the three lines the moment it reads the symbol and offers to copy them.

Three short lines cost about 57 bytes, a version 4 symbol at level M. Anything the phone should show without a signal belongs in a text code.

Use Cases for Plain Text QR Codes

Encode unformatted text data that displays directly on scanner screens without requiring internet.

📦

Product & Serial Numbers

Print asset tags, part numbers, warehouse SKUs, and inventory codes for instant offline scanning.

💡

Assembly & Safety Instructions

Embed operating guidelines, emergency contacts, or appliance instructions directly on equipment labels.

🔐

Cryptographic Keys & Passwords

Store backup recovery phrases, PGP keys, or one-time verification tokens offline on physical media.

Character Capacity & ISO/IEC Encoding Modes

How different text characters influence barcode density and module counts.

Understanding QR Text Compression Modes

The ISO/IEC 18004 standard optimizes data storage using four distinct encoding modes. The generator automatically selects the most compact binary representation:

Mode Character Set Bits per Character Max Capacity (V40)
Numeric Digits 0–9 only 3.33 bits 7,089 digits
Alphanumeric A-Z, 0-9, space, $%*+-./: 5.5 bits 4,296 characters
Byte (UTF-8) Full Latin, lowercase, symbols, emojis 8 bits 2,953 characters

Offline Cold Storage & Asset Inventory Systems

Why security engineers and warehouse managers choose plain text barcodes.

Use Case Data Payload Encoded Security / Operational Advantage
Cryptographic Cold Storage 24-word seed phrase or PGP public key Air-gapped; generated 100% in-browser with network disabled.
Warehouse SKU & Bin Tracking JSON metadata or comma-separated serial string Decoded instantly by handheld laser & camera barcode scanners without internet lookups.
Industrial Machinery Manuals Maintenance checklists & torque specifications Technicians can read instructions in basements or remote locations with zero cellular reception.

Bytes, not characters

The field accepts 3,000 characters. The symbol stores bytes.

The text field takes up to 3,000 characters, but the symbol's limit is in bytes, and the two are not the same. Plain letters, digits and punctuation are one byte each in UTF-8. Accented Latin letters are two. Most Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are three. Emoji are four.

The largest symbol, version 40, holds 2,953 bytes at level L, 2,331 at M, 1,663 at Q and 1,273 at H. So 3,000 characters of plain English will not fit at any level, and 900 characters of Japanese already needs the top version. The Bytes figure under the preview is the number to watch.

A version 40 symbol is 177 modules across. Printed at 50 mm the modules are under 0.3 mm, which most cameras cannot resolve. Long text belongs on a web page with the code pointing at it. Keep the text itself for things a phone should show without a connection: a locker code, a short instruction, an equipment label.

Line breaks are kept. What the phone does with them depends on the scanner app; most show the text in a plain box and offer to copy it.

Frequently Asked Questions: Plain Text QR Codes

Common questions regarding text encoding, offline readability, and limits.

No! Plain text QR codes store the raw text directly inside the module pattern. When scanned in airplane mode, inside basements, or in remote wilderness areas with zero mobile signal, the complete text string displays instantly on the phone screen.
Our generator supports up to 3,000 characters using automatic QR matrix scaling (from Version 1 up to Version 40). For optimal physical print readability, keeping messages concise (under 300 to 500 characters) produces cleaner, faster-scanning codes.
Yes! qr-code.love utilizes UTF-8 byte encoding. Multiline text, punctuation, symbols, and Unicode emojis are preserved and rendered accurately upon scanning.
Plain text QR codes are not encrypted—anyone with a camera or barcode scanner can decode the message. Do not print unencrypted banking credentials or sensitive personal passwords in plain text QR codes in public places.
Yes! Text QR codes are ideal for inventory management, equipment serial numbers, part identification, and maintenance logs. Export in vector SVG format for durable vinyl cutting or laser etching.
For longer text passages (over 400 characters), Error Correction Level L (7%) or Level M (15%) is recommended to keep module density manageable. For short text or industrial tags subjected to dirt and scratching, use Level Q (25%) or Level H (30%).
